STEVE ALWES

WEBAlwes28.jpg

Master artisan, craftsman, and wood designer, was inspired to create at an early age. Working with a  piece of wood in his hands brought him great joy and satisfaction. Some of the most influential times that spurred Steve on his woodworking journey was working on old houses with his dad and siblings, as well as working at his grandmother’s grocery store in Door County, WI which is known for its many art festivals, souvenir shops, and art galleries. Here he saw many forms and types of artwork made from wood. There was just something special about the texture, design and the many colors of wood that intrigued him.

As the years passed, the feel of the wood, the smell of the different types of wood, and the beauty that he saw in the amazing creations of God captivated him when watching how each piece he worked with changed before his eyes. He began to wonder if God’s purpose for giving him the artistic ability was to share with others and to glorify God’s creations as he started to make his own. His friends and family encouraged him from the start to use his talents to do just that.

As he began, he used all types of wood at different stages in the life of a tree. Some of his most loved designs are made of decaying, worm infested, fungus covered wood. Creating something beautiful out of something broken or worn had its challenges. With God’s help, Steve uses his gifts to create original and unique designs with those “broken pieces” of wood. Guided by the Master’s Hands, Steve steadily creates one-of-a-kind works of art that could be displayed in your household or place of work.
